... or, Shavua tov.
I told you a few days ago that my daughter was interviewed at (middle) school (without our prior knowledge or consent) about "violence"? for NPR? Well, we met with the teacher and she told us that this interviewer is a "very nice man."
Of course I found him on the innernut, and I found that about three weeks ago, he submitted this resolution to the Episcopal Church of West Virginia:
Proposed Tentative Agenda of the 129th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of WV, Sept. 15-17 2006(6)WHEREAS, occupation of the Palestinian people is illegal under international law, and
WHEREAS, agencies and corporations that engage in occupation and oppression are roadblocks to peace, and
WHEREAS, the Episcopal Church cannot ignore these actions nor be complicit in them, by investing in corporations that continue the oppression and occupation of the Palestinian people,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the 129th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia direct the Diocesan Council and the Diocesan Trustees to heed the call of the Diocese of Jerusalem to pursue peace and support the World Council of Churches' recent measure regarding ethical investment by investing funds responsibly and ethically, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia request the Diocesan Trustees and the Diocesan Council to investigate and refrain from investing in corporations that profit from ongoing conflict in the West Bank.
Yes, a very nice man. Very nice churches, too, I'm sure.
I'll let you know how things go. I'm keeping the guy's name out of this for the time being, until we've dealt with the school. With any luck, the resolution was voted down. I'll find out in the morning.
UPDATE: Speaking of divestment, SNAPSHOTS reports
The University of Michigan's (Dearborn campus) student government unanimously passed a resolution calling for the university to divest from companies selling to the Israeli military.
