According to the Times, “Iran’s expanding influence [in Iraq] poses a major threat to Saudi Arabia. . . . that threat cannot simply be conjured or blustered away. . . and whether Mr. Bush likes it or not, Washington needs to face up to these issues, sit down with Tehran and work out mutually acceptable solutions to these issues.” I think Neville Chamberlain once advocated an approach like this, although he might have re-thought it had he been as perspicacious as the Times in predicting what would be the result.
