Annapolis!
From what I can gather, President Bush has mentioned "the occupation," but no "Jewish state" or "defensible borders."
Miracle of miracles, Israel is refusing a Palestinian right of return to Israel as well as any mention of the Saudi Plan/Arab initiative. But otherwise the news seems fairly catastrophic (as in "nakba").
Israel has allowed herself to be reduced to the international-stature-equivalent of a bunch of Paleo terror thugs. From the Joint Understanding just released, and read by President Bush:
We express our determination to bring an end to bloodshed, suffering and decades of conflict between our peoples; to usher in a new era of peace, based on freedom, security, justice, dignity, respect and mutual recognition; to propagate a culture of peace and nonviolence; to confront terrorism and incitement, whether committed by Palestinians or Israelis.
And finally, in exchange for repetitions ... of promises ... of peace, Israel has handed her national sovereignty over to the American State Department for safekeeping:
.... The United States will monitor and judge the fulfillment of the commitment of both sides of the road map. Unless otherwise agreed by the parties, implementation of the future peace treaty will be subject to the implementation of the road map, as judged by the United States.
These are only my initial impressions. I'll go mull this over on a trip to the supermarket and Gd willing, more thoughts will follow.
