"There is a famous hassidic story about a king and his wise adviser who discover that the grain crop of the coming year contains a substance that, when ingested, induces lunacy. Since the kingdom is wholly dependent on the local grain crop for its sustenance there is no escape from consuming this lunacy-inducing grain.

The king initially suggests that he obtain healthy grain for himself, his adviser and their families. But the adviser gently reminds the king that if everyone else in the country is insane and only he and the king remain sane, they will be judged the insane ones.

The king sighs and says, 'You are right. We also will eat from the lunacy-inducing grain to be like everyone else. But let us at least put a mark on our foreheads so that when we look at each other we will realize and be reminded that we are really insane!'

 

Iran can do whatever it likes. Who's gonna stop them?

 

How could a country that stones women to death for adultery possibly be chosen to serve in a leadership role on the U.N.'s Commission on the Status of Women?

The Won has "legitimate reasons"

Rick Richman notes -and then comments upon- these "revealing remarks" by Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, yesterday:

 

".... [Administration officials] want to be authorized to impose sanctions if they so choose, but they don’t want to be required to impose them.

 

 

They cite a number of legitimate reasons for their position: workload concerns, constitutional concerns, and foreign policy concerns."

Workload concerns.

Perhaps the administration could free up some people now reviewing housing permits in Jerusalem to work on this.

 

Ahmadinejad wants to visit US

The U.S. State Department says Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has applied to visit the United States as part of an Iranian delegation to a U.N. nuclear conference in New York.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Wednesday the United States has a responsibility as the host of the U.N. headquarters to accept the Iranian president's visa request.

 

The Iranian delegation is due to participate in a conference aimed at reviewing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, of which Iran is a signatory. The monthlong conference begins Monday and has been held every five years since the NPT went into effect in 1970.

Crowley says Washington wants to see Mr. Ahmadinejad play a constructive role in the conference.

My friend Stef tells me that the Obama administration has increased the budget for the State Department by 40 percent.  I guess luminaries like P.J. Crowley don't come cheap.

.... Edward Luce of The Financial Times drew the ire of Obama aides for a couple of articles arguing that decision making in the Obama administration is extremely centralized. Neither piece was a devastating indictment of the White House, but they prompted a furious reaction.

“I was just in awe of the pummeling Ed took from top White House people,” said policy blogger and New America Foundation senior fellow Steve Clemons. He began talking to White House reporters and came away convinced that what he calls an “extremely unhealthy” relationship has developed in which the White House generally cooperates only with reporters who are willing to write source greasers or other fawning articles.

 

“Gibbs said at one of his briefings, ‘This is the most transparent administration in the history of our country.’

Peals of laughter broke out in the briefing room.”
