Yael, thank you. This is -- plain and simple -- a masterpiece. I wish I knew how those who heard this sermon responded. I'm not talking about their open, spoken response, but their real response, their deep-in-the-gut response. Were they skeptical? Bored? Incredulous? Disdainful? Or did they really and truly "get it"? Our collective refusal to believe that "ehr kumt" has very deep psychological roots. It has a lot to do, I believe, with our fear -- indeed, our dread -- of death. And isn't that -- ultimately -- what "ehr kumt" really means? Not that Bin Laden or some other knife wielding Muslim cutthroat is coming, but that death itself is coming. That is torturously difficult for many, probably most, humans to admit. And so we devise a million ways to minimize -- or even deny outright -- the jihadi threat. When the jihadis boast, as they frequently do, that "We shall win, because we love death and the West fears death," they have a point. Our fear of our own extinction may, in the end, be what extinguishes us. If so, then we -- not the jihadis -- will be what caused the end of Wesiern Civilization. Can rhetoric -- even rhetoric as eloquent as Rabbi Lewis's -- break through this resistance, this denial? I do not know. I can only say I hope so. Because we have no other way to break through -- and break through we must.
