.... The Veterans of Foreign Wars convention this week will not feature a top-tier official from the Obama administration, a breach in tradition that the group's commander described as an "insult of the highest magnitude."
However, an administration official claimed Monday that the White House made "every effort" to provide a speaker for the event, offering up a range of top officials....
"It is an insult of the highest magnitude that for the first time in the history of the VFW, the White House has apparently decided that this great and iconic organization of combat veterans and all of its members are not worthy of its notice by not at least offering a first-tier speaker from the administration."
Mitt Romney and Rick Perry both spoke at the National VFW convention (links are to the videos).

(al Reuters) - Solar start-up Solyndra LLC ... said it has suspended operations and plans to file for bankruptcy, 15 months after President Barack Obama visited a company factory that was to be expanded with the help of a federal loan guarantee.
The Chapter 11 filing, expected next week, will make Solyndra the third U.S. solar company to seek bankruptcy protection in the last month. Former Wall Street high flyer Evergreen Solar Inc filed for Chapter 11 two weeks ago, followed four days later by SpectraWatt Inc, a private company that was backed by Intel Corp....
Solyndra said it was evaluating options, including a sale of the business and licensing its copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) technology. About 1,100 employees are being laid off immediately, it said in a statement....
Rewind to November 2010:
Shortly after the president appeared at the Fremont company's headquarters in 2010, Solyndra announced it would close its older plant and move operations into a new one that was built with federal backing.
Iris Kuo - writing at GreenBeat ("interpreting innovation") - noted at the time:
Solyndra has a hard road ahead in trying to make a product that will beat Chinese prices — if it doesn’t play its cards right, it could leave egg on the DOE’s face and wind up a cautionary tale.
Let's go to the company video. {Sigh}

Breaking News Alert

President Obama to Address Congress on Jobs and Economy on Sept. 7
President Obama is requesting a joint session of Congress for next Wednesday — at 8 p.m., exactly the same time as the scheduled Republican presidential debate, as it happens — to give a much anticipated speech outlining his proposals to boost employment and the economy. In a letter to the leaders of both houses of Congress on Wednesday, Mr. Obama said it is his “intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses, helping Americans get back to work, and putting more money in the paychecks of the middle class and working Americans.”
That Mr. Obama was going to make his speech next week was expected. But it is remarkable that he would choose to do so in such an elevated setting, and at the same time that Republican candidates for president will be laying out their own vision for how to get the country out of the economic doldrums.
The "news alert" is lifted from "The Caucus" blog at the Times, where Helene Cooper writes further that:
.... The Republican debate scheduled at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., would be the first since Gov. Rick Perry of Texas joined the race and promptly took a big lead in polls over former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.
The sponsors of the debate were contemplating their options on Wednesday afternoon and had no immediate comment. The Sept. 7 debate is sponsored by NBC News, Politico and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation; it is to be televised by MSNBC, CNBC and the Spanish-language network Telemundo and streamed on the Internet by Politico. It is to be moderated by NBC’s Brian Williams and Politico’s John Harris.
The White House press secretary, Jay Carney, said “of course not” when asked whether White House officials chose the time of Mr. Obama’s speech to interfere with the Republican debate....
From Politico:
Asked later if the interruption is then an “added bonus” for the White House, Carney suggested that isn’t the case. “There's one president, there's 20-some-odd debates," he said.
“There are many opportunities for the American people. There's a choice they can make to watch the president, to watch the debate,” he said.
“A network could make a decision to alter the timing of the debate by an hour.”
Carney later elaborated, saying that if “sponsors chose and the candidates so chose to adjust the timing of their debate ... that would be completely fine with us, in the spirit of democracy.”

Frank Gaffney (via Shirl in Jerusalem by way of Andy in NJ):
ROLL BACK THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD
In recent weeks, we have been put on notice repeatedly: Absent a fundamental course correction, America will go the way of Europe and others before it, succumbing to an insidious totalitarian doctrine known as shariah whose purpose, in the words of its prime practitioners - the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) - is to "destroy Western civilization from within."
Hurricanes, earthquakes and fiscal crises are preoccupations of the moment. Unless we heed the warnings being issued by three of our most brilliant strategic thinkers, Mark Steyn, Bat Ye'or and Andrew McCarthy, however, we risk an irreversible national calamity.
Each of these authors has published in the past month powerful alarums about the steady erosion of the West's societies, governing institutions and freedoms at the hands of shariah's adherents and their enablers on the left.
A consistent theme of these three important works is that we run grave risks in taking for granted the permanence of a world order dominated by liberal democracies and led by the United States. Yet, we are doing so even as evidence accumulates that Islamists, led by the Muslim Brotherhood and the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), are making steady strides towards their goal of establishing a new, transnational order. They would have it take the form of a global "Caliphate," in which the world will be ruled in accordance with shariah.
Sounds crazy? It may be. But if history teaches us anything, it is that determined, disciplined and ruthless people can do incalculable harm to others in the pursuit of crazy, supremacist goals.
What is truly crazy, though, is the role being played today by "progressive" elites that doing today what they have done in the face of totalitarians of the past: facilitating the latters' frightening ambitions....
... In the face of such folly, Members of Congress and private citizens are striving not merely to halt these and other examples of reckless official "engagement" with the Muslim Brotherhood; they are beginning to roll back the MB. With the leadership of two freshmen congressmen, Reps. John Duncan (R-SC) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ), the House of Representatives has adopted amendments aimed at denying any taxpayer funding to the Brotherhood.
These and similar initiatives by citizens across the nation are being profiled at a new website sponsored by the Center for Security Policy: TheRollback.org. Their stories serve as a powerful inspiration and as impetuses for similar efforts by others.
Since Gaffney has brought up Andrew McCarthy, I'd just like for BtB readers to note that McCarthy met with Rick "The Stealth Jihad Candidate" Perry last month.
Anyone scrutinizing presidential candidates will want to read about it.... at NRO's The Corner:
... I did indeed travel to Austin last week to meet with Governor Rick Perry. There was a small group of us former government official types, and we talked about a variety of national security issues.
The Governor is a very impressive guy. I admire him, and I hope I was of whatever help he thought I could be in thinking through the challenges we face. It’s a very good thing for the country when people weighing decisions as important as whether to run for president tap into the relevant experience of current and former officials.
I’ve had similar discussions with some of the other candidates. My rule of thumb is that if a public official thinks consulting with me will help him or her arrive at good policy, I make myself available to do that, regardless of party affiliation or whether I generally agree with the official’s politics. (People of very different political persuasions can often find common ground on national security and law enforcement issues, and I’ve learned an awful lot banging things around with folks whose politics are very different from mine.)
I’ve occasionally declined to meet, but only when I had good reason to think the purpose of a proposed meeting was just to say a meeting happened rather than to engage in a good faith discussion....

You guys are spoiling me! I hardly have to work at all; I just post what the mishpocheh points me to. Todah to Chaim xoxo.
.... When an Orthodox Jewish, kippa-wearing Democratic candidate might lose a congressional election in the most Jewish (and 75% Democratic) congressional district in America – a seat occupied by Democrats for nearly a century – to a non-Jewish Republican, something significant is going on. And Golda Koppelman knows what that something is.
New York’s 9th Congressional District (Brooklyn and Queens) is gearing up for the September 13, 2011 special election to fill the seat vacated by disgraced Democrat Anthony Weiner. Koppelman, a Holocaust survivor who has lived her American life in the district, is a devout Jewish mother and grandmother, with family in both Israel and America. Like many of her generation, she’s also a devout Democrat. Until now.
“I have never voted for a Republican in my life” she says. But in this election, “I don’t even care who the Democrat is; I am voting Republican to show Obama I am upset with his policy on Israel.”
Koppelman is not alone. That attitude toward President Obama accounts in large part for the surprising emergence of Israel policy as a key issue between two pro-Israel candidates, Democrat David Weprin and Republican Bob Turner. They’re statistically tied in recent polls.
Turner, a no-nonsense businessman, Zionist and deficit hawk, is not only endorsed by pro-Israel stalwarts Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Peter King; he recently received a major endorsement from Democratic former mayor and outspoken Zionist Ed Koch....

Thom Shanker and Eric Schmitt "report" that:
... After weeks of internal debate,
White House officials adopted...
communications documents
to shape public events and official statements...
on a day when
the world’s attention will be focused on President Obama,
his leadership team and his nation.
Are they mad?! The world's attention will be focused on ...
OBAMA?
I thought we had become used to the media-worship of the Narcissist-In-Chief, but on the tenth anniversary of 9/11? Have they no shame at all? Were Thom Shanker and Eric Schmitt paying attention in 2001, or were they in grammar school in a foreign country?
And as if that aspect weren't bad enough, we have the mainstream media in total compliance with the Obama administration's efforts to choreograph commemoration of 9/11... here and across the world.
Can you IMAGINE dhimmedia's hue and cry if then-President George W. Bush had issued "detailed guidelines" on how the anniversary of 9/11 was to be commemorated?!
In common law, a hue and cry is a process by which bystanders are summoned to assist in the apprehension of a criminal who has been witnessed in the act of committing a crime.
By the statute of Winchester, 13 Edw. I cc. 1 and 4, (1285) it was provided that anyone, either a constable or a private citizen, who witnessed a crime shall make hue and cry, and that the hue and cry must be kept up against the fleeing criminal from town to town and from county to county, until the felon is apprehended and delivered to the sheriff. All able-bodied men, upon hearing the shouts, were obliged to assist in the pursuit of the criminal, which makes it comparable to the posse comitatus.
It was moreover provided that a hundred that failed to give pursuit on the hue and cry would become liable in case of any theft or robbery. Those who raised a hue and cry falsely were themselves guilty of a crime.
In contemporary terms, the hue and cry is also used figuratively to describe the behaviour of the news media, or to other groups that seek to increase awareness of a perceived injustice.
From RedState:
The Obama regime shamelessly issued two sets of documents setting guidelines on how to commemorate the 9/11 terrorist attacks against United States.
One set of the 9/11 commemoration guidelines, entitled “9/11 Anniversary Planning,” is for domestic audiences and highlights Obama’s continuing attempts to politicize the 9/11 anniversary as a campaign propaganda tool.
According to the New York Times, the guidelines list what themes to underscore — and the tone to set...
The guidelines also seek to remind everyone that Osama bin Laden was killed and cite his death as a reason for officials to “minimize references to Al Qaeda”...
You'll have to READ IT ALL at RedState. It will not likely escape your notice that in Obama's "rearrangement" of the world, the Jewish State of Israel is "wiped off the face of the map" ... as per usual:
... The 9/11 commemoration guidelines aimed at foreign audiences call on American officials to praise overseas partners, who have joined the worldwide effort to combat violent extremism, formerly known as the Global War On Terror:
"We honor and celebrate the resilience of individuals, families, and communities on every continent, whether in New York or Nairobi, Bali or Belfast, Mumbai or Manila, or Lahore or London."
