Dead? AWOL? Insane? I'd answer "none of the above." The Leftists of the MSM are simply doing what Leftists have always done: worshipping at the altar of their Ultimate Leader. There is something in the Leftist heart and soul that hankers after a Glorious Chieftain -- someone before whom they can prostrate themselves in slavish devotion, warm and secure in the knowledge that he will forever remove from them their heaviest burden, the burden of thinking for themselves. This yearning for a Supreme Commander is why it has been so easy -- in one socialist country after another -- for a single tyrant to control millions -- and to receive their adulation while doing so. Early in this decade, America's Leftists found their long-sought Ultimate Leader and, in 2008, with the help of innumerable suckers and chumps, installed him in the White House. When those mental midgets at the NYT write that on 9/11 the world's attention will be focused on President Obama, that's not temporary insanity -- that's what they regard as absolute truth. What they regard as insane are people like me and those other readers of BtB who refuse to see the "truth." Anyone who wants to read a fuller -- and far superior -- explanation of this phenomenon should consult Orwell's "1984" or Hoffer's "The True Believer." These two guys told the story far better than I can.

My Great-Grandfather (for whom I was named), left Ireland as a teenager in 1850. The misery, lack of freedom and opportunity, and the totality of government control had become intolerable. He became a citizen of the United States on September 22, 1856. The petition for citizenship, which he signed, had the following provision. "I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, of whom I was before a subject." I wonder how he would feel about the rapid implementation of an imperial presidency that we seem to readily accept?

Tom -- that is an absolutely wonderful question. We 21st-century Americans should be ashamed of ourselves for our servility and simplemindedness -- without which there'd have been no imperial presidency.
