The "inevitability" ploy is exactly that: a ploy -- disseminated, no doubt, by Romney's campaign in a near-desperate effort to create a stampede toward a candidacy that, no matter how hard it tries, cannot gin up the slightest enthusiasm among smaller-government Republicans. I don't know if the man will become the GOP candidate or not -- but I do know this: He's no conservative -- and anyone wishful enough or naive enough to think he is will, if Romney becomes president, be sorely disappointed. In less parlous times, Romney might have made an okay president -- but the condition of the country today cries out for someone stronger and bolder than this overweeningly ambitious but otherwise mediocre man.
