Mannie Sherberg
I'm too old to spend my time pining for things that cannot be -- but I must admit to harboring a wish that Allen West were running for the presidency. He'd stand out in the current crowd of candidates the way Gulliver stood our among the Lilliputians. He's one of a very few people in American public life who can best be described by old-fashioned terms that we rarely get a chance to use these days: tough ... plain-spoken ... a man of probity and rectitude -- all qualities that don't seem much on display any more. Even the so-called "interrogation incident" in Iraq -- which probably led to his retirement from the army -- showed him to be a man of exemplary courage and character. It's evidently too late for 2012 -- but maybe we can start a boomlet for Allen West in 2016. If America is truly to be turned around, it'll take someone very much like him to steer the ship of state.
