« Obama Running as George McGovern? | Main | "Not to worry, says Barry Antoinette. Let them eat condoms." »

In Victorian novels, and on the Victorian stage, one of the stock characters was the parvenu -- the vulgarian who had suddenly acquired a pile of money and surrounded himself or herself with everything except good taste. The Obamas are parvenus -- people who either don't know or don't care that flaunting one's good fortune -- especially in a time of widespread material distress -- is excruciatingly bad taste. But I'm beginning to think that the First Couple's predilection for the ostentatious High Life is more than a matter of bad taste -- it's also a matter of desperation. I think The One and Mrs. One are telling each other, "We'd better enjoy it while we can." After all, in less than 12 months, they could be back in Chicago's south-side -- which, compared to Aspen, is a lackluster -- and unflauntable -- place to be.

Please God, let them be back in Chicago.
