I will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, if things continue as they have so far.

I'm not just talking about the super PACs and anonymous outside groups -- I'm talking about the Romney campaign itself.

 The Romney campaign raises more than we do....

....We can be outspent and still win -- but we can't be outspent 10 to 1 and still win.

For a while, these letters were sociologically interesting: prime examples of the Art of the Shnorrer -- or what is politely referred to as the fundraising profession. By now, however, they're just demeaning -- not to the recipients, but to the guy who sends them. This is, after all, the president of the United States -- a job that used to require some dignity -- using all the wiles of the full-time panhandler to scrounge up a few miserable dollars -- while the world's richest men are as close as his telephone. If he can't get what he needs from them, then something is seriously wrong with either him or his campaign or both. But it is simply degrading for the "most powerful man on earth" -- who has Bill Gates and George Soros and Mark Zuckerberg at his beck and call -- to grovel for handouts by telling such monumental lies as "we can't be outspent 10 to 1 and still win." If Obama is outspent 10 to 1 in this race -- or even 2 to 1 -- then I am not just a monkey's uncle, I am Tarzan of the Apes.
