Letter from John Adams to Abigail Adams, 3 July 1776: 

 

.... It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more...."

 

 

As most of us are celebrating - in some fashion or other - the history of our nation's struggle for freedom and independence from the tyrannical rule of a foreign monarchy, the (so-called) progressive Left wants to talk about... "American Anguish" ??

If the progressive Left wants to waste this glorious holiday anguishing, here's something really worth anguishing about: Why -- after more than a century of public schooling -- are there virtually no Americans who can write with anything like the lucidity, the elegance, and the wisdom of John Adams? No anguish in this household. WHAT A GREAT DAY!!! Our youngest son will marry his sweetheart on the day we say Happy Birthday America! From this day on, their wedding anniversary will be celebrated from coast to coast, with parades and fireworks. And I will have an easy time remembering their anniversary date. A special thanks for 236 years of freedom because of the men and women who gave us a country, and have protected it since it's birth. Love you T/Sgt Patrick and Miss Kim, our youngest son and newest daughter.

Tom -- I can't imagine a better way for two people to spend their life together than to celebrate -- each year -- the beginning of their marriage on the same day they celebrate the beginning of their country. Congratulations to the newly-weds and the whole Glennon family. And a special "Thank you" to T/Sgt Patrick for the sacrifices he's making to keep all of us safe, and to Miss Kim for her sacrifices as well. As long as we have folks like them, every day will be a GREAT DAY for America.
