According to Whittle, Romney's pick of Ryan shows that he's betting "the American people are not, in fact, the poorly informed, selfish, moral cowards that the Democrats are betting that they are."

Whittle is on to something. No other president in my lifetime has evinced anything like Obama's contempt for the intelligence and the character of the American people. That's what happens when the only teachers in your life who really matter have been scoundrels and cynics like Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, and Saul Alinsky: You begin to believe that everyone is as base as your own teachers -- and as yourself.
