O how I wish Freud were here to comment on this post! When he first proposed the theory of a death instinct, he was derided as an intellectual screwball. Now it appears that the intellectual screwball diagnosed -- many decades in advance -- the malady that may yet bring down a civilization that has been three millenia in the making. What besides a deep death wish can explain the presence of Muslim terrorists at a major-party American political convention -- and what else can explain the cheerful acquiescence of "hundreds of Jewish clergy"?
