Mannie Sherberg
Whatever you call it -- transnationalism, multiculturalism, postmodernism, affirmative action -- it's essentially gussied-up Marxism dressed in modern rather than Victorian togs. Marx gave us the idea that a single group -- the proletariat -- would inherit the earth. When that idea proved to be a bust, the Left -- rather than abandon it -- decided to up-date it. Instead of one group, we now have many groups, but all of them share the trait that characterized the proletariat: they all claim to be victims. All the rest of us -- who don't consider ourselves a part of any of these groups and certainly don't see ourselves as victims -- share the trait that allegedly characterized Marx's much-despised bourgeois: we're the "victimizers." The costumes have changed, the cast has been enlarged, the scenery has been modified -- but, in the end, it's still the same old play. Say what you will about Marx: he was one of the world's great playwrights.
