Ronald Reagan spent Christmas at the White House in Washington DC so that his Secret Service agents and other aides could spend Christmas at home with their families. So said the Reagan Ranch Presidential Scholar for Young America's Foundation, Floyd Brown, in 2006.
And this bit from the Orlando Sentinel, Dec. 23, 1988, confirms it:
PRESIDENT AND Mrs. Reagan will spend Christmas away from the White House for the first time in eight years. They are to leave today for the house in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles where they will live after Reagan's term ends Jan. 20....
The comparison is unavoidable:
White House Chef Joins the Obamas in Hawaii
President Obama’s vacation in paradise includes an element that may be making his time there even more fulfilling: the White House chef.
Sam Kass, the tasty-health-food guru [and "Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Foods Initiative"] the Obamas added to the White House kitchen in 2009 – they didn’t fire the old chef, just added a second – revealed his presence in Hawaii Saturday when he showed up on the golf course with the president.
It’s not clear if Kass hopped a ride aboard Air Force One or if he is staying with the Obamas and cooking for them. But it wouldn’t be surprising, given that he was their personal chef in Chicago for two years before moving to Washington to continue preparing their meals.
Nevertheless, the Obamas dined out with friends last night...
