There's a Yiddish term of contempt -- "a shande un a kharpie" -- often applied to the brazenly opportunistic or the shamelessly insolent. It translates into "a shame and a disgrace." The phrase was coined, of course, long before Obama was born, but it does seem like a coinage that's been waiting for someone who would turn a visit to the Kotel into a pitch for votes.

I am sure Obama would respond that it's not fair to blame him for an expression coined before he was born. As for his second coming to Jerusalem, Israel, it will feature neither a visit to the Kotel nor an appearance before the Knesset -- the shrines of Jewish religion and Israeli democracy, the survival of each a combination of ancient and modern miracles -- but rather a campaign-style event at a convention center, before a carefully-selected audience. How small, how pedestrian, how different from the last visit of an American president five years ago.

Long ago Christians were instructed to pray privately in a secret place to be rewarded openly in due time, but that if you pray to be seen by men you have already received your reward. Not that you should not pray in public but our hearts have to be right. Unfortunately we are also instructed to pray for our leaders, something that is hard to do, so this is a good prayer for us to pray on O's behalf so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives no matter what.
