Montreal police are investigating after somebody threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of an orthodox Jewish boys' school late Friday night.
I can guarantee this didn't make the headlines of your local newspaper. In fact, it didn't make it into your paper at all, unless you live in Canada.
A Google News search for {firebomb Montreal} yields ten results, not one of them issuing from outside of Canada. Only if you read the Victoria Times Colonist, the Montreal Gazette, the Ottawa Citizen, the Vancouver Sun, the Globe and Mail or listen to 580 CFRA Radio or watch CBC News, would you know about this.
Blogosphere to the rescue!
... The flaming projectile went through the window into the entrance of the Skver-Toldos Orthodox Jewish Boys school in ritzy anglophone Outremont just after midnight.A Montreal police spokesman said a neighbour heard breaking glass, looked outside and saw flames inside the school.
The suspect was wearing a mask and surveillance tapes are in black-and-white, providing few descriptive details of the attacker's clothing.
"At this point, I'm not quite sure if it's a hate crime or just young people (causing trouble)," said Const. Raphael Bergeron.
"With all the incidents in the past year in Montreal, of course we're investigating if it's a hate crime," he said.
The Canadian Jewish Congress, Quebec Region says the Molotov cocktail went through the window only minutes after the school had been vacated.
"Such hateful acts cannot be tolerated by our society," said CJC QR president Jeffrey K. Boro.
"We have every confidence that the perpetrators of this despicable attack will be caught by police and charged accordingly," said Boro.
UPDATE from CBC News
Students returned to class Monday morning at an orthodox Jewish boys school in Montreal, two days after a firebomb attack early Saturday damaged the facility. The incident, which was caught on security camera and has brought an anonymous donation of $5,000 in reward money, has left the school's president trying to decide what to do next.
"Our only concern is the safety of the children," said Fred Gestetner, who has considered bringing in counsellors for the children and is looking at increasing security.
"We are shocked with it, but it's something we have to handle in this day and age, I guess."
The incident at the Taldos Yakov Yosef school in Outremont has not been declared a hate crime by local police because of the absence of graffiti or other evidence. The damage was minimal, but local Jewish groups say they are sure it's anti-Semitism.
"The best possible conclusion is that people understand these kind of acts are unacceptable and should never take place in a free and democratic society," said Steve Slimovitch, of B'nai Brith. "But that seems to be not the case."
This was the second incident in two years involving a firebomb attack on a local Jewish school.
In 2004, the library at Montreal's United Talmud Torah school was destroyed by fire. A note left at the scene said it was in retaliation for the Israeli army's killing of a Hamas leader in the Middle East.
A 19-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison in 2005 for the attack.
LGF has this item juxtaposed with Muslims Are the New Jews. Charles writes: "As 9/11 approaches, we’re going to see more and more nauseating politically correct articles whitewashing Islamic terrorism."
Gd forbid that we should also see more and more firebombs in our children's schools. Wake up, people. They're attacking our children's schools. What more could you possibly need to know?
