You are really pretty confused about this issue. (1) The Census Bureau didn't make the change; the Office of Management and Budget made it. (2) Race has been self-identification in the census at least since 1970, when they began to do the census by mail. (3) It's never been defined by any type of legislation. Laws which provide benefits for minority groups via affirmative action depend on either self-identification or census counts. I'm having trouble understanding just what your point is. Are you anti-affirmative action? If you want to contact me to discuss this rationally, you may do so at [email protected].

What a nice invitation. If I want to discuss this rationally? I may do so? You are too generous. And I'll just stay here, thanks. Now as to question of whether I am "anti-affirmative action" -- let me put it this way: I have a dream, that one day we will all be judged, not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.

LOL! Yael: 1 Becker: 0 "Race" doesn't need to be defined by "legislation"; the OMB does that for lawmakers, and the Census Bureau (and therefore "any type of legislation") uses OMB standards for defining race and ethnicity, avoiding that nasty "Racist" label. http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/raceqandas.html http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/race/Ombdir15.html
