You ask if American Jews know these things. I'm not sure many of them want to know these things. It seems that many of our co-religionists have decided that "Ignorance is bliss" is the 614th commandment -- and the one that overrules all the others. Here in St. Louis, our local Jewish-Federation-published newspaper contains a plethora of froth, trivia, gossip, and chit-chat -- but virtually no sustained in-depth reporting on the Iranian threat to the continued existence of the Jewish people. This is a subject that should be hammered at again and again, in every issue every week, from every possible angle. And this should be done by every so-called "Jewish" paper in the country. My guess is that a survey of all the country's Jewish papers would find more articles -- over the last six months -- on how to make the perfect latke than on how to overcome the Iranian menace. This is willful ignorance -- a deliberate effort by a people once noted for its braininess to hear no evil and see no evil. We -- I speak here of American Jews -- are choosing brain-deadness over braininess. Why? I can only assume it's because -- in this case -- knowledge of the truth is simply too awful for many pampered American Jews to live with. That odious man T. S. Eliot was wrong about a great many things, but he was right about one: "Human kind," he wrote, "cannot bear very much reality." Too many Jews cannot bear the reality that a man like Ahmadinejad may soon have at his fingertips -- literally -- the ability to extinguish the entire nation of Israel. Better to focus on making the perfect latke.
