Mannie Sherberg
It's impossible NOT to feel better after a "therapy session" with Jackie Mason. The man never fails to restore my spirits. And I know why: It's because he is an exemplar of what can be achieved with plain talk. In an era of gobbledygook, doublespeak, evasion, cant, bureaucratese, obfuscation, circumlocution, mummery, moonshine and poppycock, the guy simply says what's on his mind in matter-of-fact down-to-earth English. He seems incapable of speaking a single politically-correct sentence. Strange, isn't it? The phrase "straight shooter" was born on the American frontier to describe the bold and blunt speech favored by the early settlers. Yet here's a guy from the American east -- with none of the marks of a pioneer or a homesteader -- giving us all lessons in how tough-as-nails Americans once used their language. He's a national treasure.
