In response to this article at the Jerusalem Post, the first comment in the "talkbacks" is from someone named Alan in the States:
Rahall has always betrayed Arab Christians with his non-stop support of both the PLO and Hezbollah for DECADES! I vividly remember Rahall expressing solidarity with Arafat back in 1982 and his voting record in Congress has always been pro-terror and anti-Israel. Not only has he been a non-stop enemy of Israel in congress, but like the obnoxious Helen Thomas, he has even abandoned the pitiful remnants of a Lebanese Christian Community swallowed up by Hezbollah. West Virginia just lost one Jew-hating Democrat(Byrd); let it lose another one.
Thank you Alan. I think I love you:)
I'm sorry to say that in 1982 I had yet to begin to pay attention, but I do remember the spring of 2007, when Nancy Pelosi set off on her own foreign policy jaunt to Syria, in defiance of the President, the State Department and official U.S. foreign policy. Nick Rahall was (literally) at her side.
LebanonWire.com Opinion, April 19, 2007:
Nick Rahall Fails to Represent the Cedars Revolution!
Fails to Represent the Aspirations of the Millions of Arabs and Middle Easterners that Want Freedom and Democracy in the Region! Fails to Represent the American Initiatives for Democracy in the Region
By Eblan Farris, Director of Communications, World Council for the Cedars Revolution
.... Syria has been implicated in the assassination of a very strong, popular Lebanese prime minister, Rafik Hariri. Syria is supporting Hezbollah which is trying to unseat our ally, Siniora, in Lebanon. Syria is supporting the terrorist group Hamas against our allies in the Fatah Palestinian movement and, of course, Israel. The administration, in all fairness - people in Washington should know, if they don’t know, that the administration has been trying in many ways, in diplomatic discussions with Syria since 9/11, to get Assad to change his behavior and he has not. When Nancy Pelosi goes there, she sends a message of disunity. She legitimizes the Syrian government.
One should wonder why members of Congress and Nick Rahall in particular, a descendant from Lebanon, would not focus their entire trip on those defending our initiatives in the region. Instead they chose the path of rewarding the Syrians with American presence and words of peace.....
This CNN report at the time gave Mr. Rahall his 15 seconds of infamy, starting at the 5:00 mark.
And - last thing - while I'm on this Rahall-dot-connecting binge, I should remind you that the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee or "ADC" (where Rahall serves on the Advisory Committee) is Celebrating Helen next month! Tickets are probably selling like hotcakes, so you might want to decide right away whether or not you'd like to attend.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), which is non-profit, non-sectarian and non-partisan, is the largest grassroots Arab-American civil rights and civil liberties organization in the United States. It was founded in 1980 by former Senator James Abourezk. ADC has a national network of chapters and members in all 50 states.
The ADC Research Institute (ADCRI) is a Section 501(c)(3) educational affiliate. ADCRI programs include research studies, seminars, conferences and publications that document and analyze the discrimination faced by Arab Americans in the workplace, schools, media, and governmental agencies and institutions. ADC and ADCRI celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Arabs and Arab-Americans.
