The [United Nations] Under-Secretary-General for Oversight Services put it so well:

 The [UN] Secretariat is "drifting into irrelevance."  

 

 

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel's occupation of the West Bank is "morally and politically unsustainable, and must end," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.

In a speech delivered Wednesday in Uruguay by his assistant, Ban also praised the Palestinian Authority's state-building program and criticized Israel for continued settlement building, according to reports.

“Time is of the essence in realizing the two-state solution," Ban said. "The occupation that started in 1967 is morally and politically unsustainable, and must end. The Palestinians have a legitimate right to the establishment of an independent and viable state of their own.

 

 

Oh, go to hell. (And take the "Palestinian Authority" with you).

Isn't it long overdue to respond to all these and all future accusations, reproaches, suspicions, slanders and denunciations by simply folding our arms and loudly, clearly, coldly and calmly answer with the only argument that is understandable and accessible to this public: 'Go to Hell!'?

Iran has secretly executed a Jewish woman and her Armenian (Orthodox Christian) husband, along with three other people, at the notorious Evian prison. The executions took place on March 13.

The regime has refused to disclose the charges that led to the executions, and has refused to turn over the bodies for burial in accordance with the dead persons' religious faith.

But don't expect Barack Obama [or Ban Ki-moon] to ride to their rescue....

What's a little mustard and nerve gas among friends?

My friend DEBKA reports:

Senior Libyan rebel “officers” sold Hizballah and Hamas thousands of chemical shells from the stocks of mustard and nerve gas that fell into rebel hands when they overran Muammar Qaddafi’s military facilities in and around Benghazi, debkafile’s exclusive military and intelligence sources report.

Word of the capture touched off a scramble in Tehran and among the terrorist groups it sponsors to get hold of their first unconventional weapons.

According to our sources, the rebels offloaded at least 2,000 artillery shells carrying mustard gas and 1,200 nerve gas shells for cash payment amounting to several million dollars.

US and Israeli intelligence agencies have tracked the WMD consignments from eastern Libya as far as Sudan in convoys secured by Iranian agents andHizballah and Hamas guards. They are not believed to have reached their destinations in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, apparently waiting for an opportunity to get their deadly freights through without the US or Israelattacking and destroying them.

It is also not clear whether the shells and gases were assembled upon delivery or were travelling in separate containers. Our sources report that some of the poison gas may be intended not only for artillery use but also for drones which Hizballah recently acquired from Iran.

Tehran threw its support behind the anti-Qaddafi rebels because of this unique opportunity to get hold of the Libyan ruler’s stock of poison gas after it fell into opposition hands and arm Hizballah and Hamas with unconventional weapons without Iran being implicated in the transaction.

 

Why, it was just about a month ago that 

A senior administration official said ... that the White House had no reason to believe the current turmoil in Libya has made its chemical weapons stockpiles more vulnerable to theft....

.... “We believe that whatever they have at this point is not in weaponized form,” said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley.

 

Two weeks later Crowley was forced to resign... for calling Wikileaks leaker Bradley Manning "stupid and counterproductive."  You decide.

March 29 was supposed to have been a big day regarding U.S. sanctions relating to Iran.

For six months, the State Department has been investigating international firms involved in Iran’s petroleum sector, including various Chinese, Turkish and Venezuelan companies. Under the “Comprehensive Iran Sanctions and Divestment Act” (CISADA), the Department’s determinations were due by March 29.

On March 29, the State Department issued a press release ominously entitled “Iran Sanctions Announcement” ....

Gas Prices: The White House Feels Your Pain

Yesterday the White House "unveiled a Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future that sets a goal of reducing our imports of foreign oil."  

I heard on the news that this was a "deliberate pivot," away from Obama's Third War.

So just in case I might have neglected to pivot in a timely fashion, David Plouffe [senior White House adviser and author of The Audacity to Win] sent me an email this afternoon.

ALL of these Hezbollah installations in southern Lebanon are in direct violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The Resolution called for "full implementation of the relevant provisions of the Taif Accords, and of resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1680 (2006), that require the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, so that, pursuant to the Lebanese cabinet decision of July 27, 2006, there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state."

The Hezbollah terrorist organization is spread out between as many as 1,000 facilities in southern Lebanon, located in 270 civilian villages.

The organization continues to acquire munitions and strengthen, funded by Syria which is also smuggling weapons to it. This includes weapons which can reach populations in the center of Israel in cities like Tel Aviv.

According to IDF intelligence, since the end of the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Hezbollah has built as many as 550 bunkers in the southern Lebanon region, holding various weapons. In addition, the organization has built 300 underground facilities and 100 storage units for munitions including rockets, missiles and other weapons.

Many of these terror centers are located near hospitals, private homes and schools, Hezbollah's way of taking advantage of the civilian population of Lebanon.

According to the IDF Northern Command, Hezbollah militants have doubled in number since the end of the last war. 

 

   

Today, Hezbollah is estimated to have an arsenal of more than 40,000 rockets. This being the case, if war breaks out, Hezbollah will be able to launch between 500 and 600 rockets at Israel every day. One of the organization's main civilian centers for storing munitions is the village of Al Khiyam in southern Lebanon, where hundreds of rockets and mortar shells with varying ranges are stored. More than 100 Hezbollah militants operate in the village, including special forces ready for combat with IDF soldiers.

Hezbollah is thus trying to distort the balance of power in Lebanon and return to full, routine militant activity in southeast Lebanon, similar to its activity levels just prior to the war in 2006.

Hezbollah militant activities are based in southern Lebanon, funded and maintained by Syria and Iran....

Hanan Ashrawi: She's baaack!

I was half kidding when I asked where Hanan Ashrawi has been all these years, so this came as a bit of a shock.

And where has she been last week? Friday's public schedule for William Burns (number three person in the State Department) showed a meeting with the Chinese ambassador at 10 a.m., a meeting at the White House at 11 a.m., and a meeting at 3 p.m.: “Under Secretary Burns meets with Dr. Hanan Ashrawi of the Palestinian Initiative for Global Dialogue and Democracy.”

Oy gevalt. And just before that, she was speaking at Princeton. (Do you know where your children are?)  

What I didn't realize is that she is part of Abu Mazen's Misc. Arab "government." (Or is she?)

Political Science professor Bret Kincaid of Eastern University (a Christian university affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA)  took his students to visit her during spring break (Mexico was out of the question):

It was Thursday morning of spring break and [we] were in the West Bank city of Ramallah to visit a Christian political rock star in the turmoil called the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Her name is Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, the once political consultant and close friend of the Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat and now a leader of a tiny Palestinian political party called The Third Way, the name of which infers a political approach that eschews the corruption of Fatah (the current governing party of the West Bank) and the violence and anti-Israel Hamas (the opposing party governing the Gaza Strip).  The diminutive size of The Third Way belies its political power as it includes Prime Minister Salam Fayyad as another of its leaders.

We were experiencing mental and emotional whiplash and were in Dr. Ashrawi's government office to ask her a few questions....

 

It's easy to see how the present misadministration might welcome Ashrawi.  She is Obama's ideological twin, a fellow 'community organizer.'

On September 26, 2009 ... she defined her current role in the following way: “I think of myself essentially as a human being with a multidimensional mission. Basically, I am a Palestinian, I am a woman, I am an activist and a humanist, more than being a politician. And at the same time I feel that quite often things are thrust upon us rather than come as a result of a calm and deliberate choice.” 

 

Ah yes, the "thrust upon us" feeling. How familiar is that?

The Palestinian Authority Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Issa Karake, visited the family of the terrorist Abbas Al-Sayid who planned the Passover suicide bombing in 2002. Thirty Israelis were killed in the terror attack, when a suicide bomber entered a hotel in Netanya and detonated his bomb during the Passover Seder dinner. Al-Sayid is serving 30 life sentences for planning this attack.

In 2003, the PA sponsored a soccer tournament named the "Tulkarm Shahids Memorial soccer championship tournament of the Shahid Abd Al-Baset Odeh" describing the perpetrator as a "shahid" (martyr).  71% of Palestinians polled about the tournament said it was a "good thing" that it was named in honor of the bomber (New York Sun).

By bombing Libya, President Barack Obama accomplished some things once thought absolutely impossible in America:

•War-mongering liberals. Liberals are now chest-thumping about military "progress" in Libya. Even liberal television and radio cite ingenious reasons why an optional, preemptive American intervention in an oil-producing Arab country, without prior congressional approval or majority public support – and at a time of soaring deficits – is well worth supporting, in a sort of "my president, right or wrong" fashion. Apparently, liberal foreign policy is returning to the pre-Vietnam days of the hawkish "best and brightest."

Why are liberals such shameless hypocrites when it comes to war? It’s as though they don’t realize that what they’ve said during the Bush years is in print and on video for the whole world to see…forever.  We know what you’ve said in the past, and now you have the exact opposite position, solely because a Obama is President.  It’s pathetic....

.... For a while, I thought that being anti-war was just part of being a liberal.  I heard their criticisms of the war every single day for years.  I didn’t think that which party held the Presidency had any bearing on their position on the United States getting involved in war.  I just figured they would oppose it no matter who was President, Democrat or Republican.  Boy, was I wrong!  I quickly found out that most liberals are only anti-war when a Republican is in the White House.  They go on radio and TV every single day and criticize Republicans for the cost of the war, both in dollars and lives.

But, when Obama was elected, something miraculous happened.  The anti-war protests went silent (for the most part).  All of a sudden, when Obama gives the go ahead to launch over 200 Tomahawk missiles at Libya, the liberal media have become “hawkish” on war kinetic military action.

Where has Hanan Ashrawi been all these years?

Now it has emerged that Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi served on the advisory board of the 2001 commission that originally founded Responsibility to Protect.

 

 

 

Hmm, I remember her.  Ashrawi was the first Arabic name I learned to spell (in English), after Arafat.  Luckily, my archives go waaaay back.

.... September brought the first anniversary of 9/11 and Hanan Ashrawi came to Boulder. I wrote objections to everyone I could think of, including university regents, but Boulder was adrift in protestations of "academic freedom" and "free speech." The local newspaper published ten anti-Israel letters in as many days. Mine was apparently too bitter to merit publication:

"With regard to the generous support shown by Boulderites in the [Daily] Camera for the speaking engagement of Hanan Ashrawi, I would like to thank the larger community for its sensitivity toward us Jews in this difficult time. I am deeply moved that a representative of Yasir Arafat's terrorist regime will be welcomed here, not only by the general public but by the venerable institution of Colorado University, where only last spring I was able to see anti-Semitic graffiti . . ."
