From Peter Wehner (even "flirting" with supporting Trump is "silly") to Jonah Goldberg (he's a "b.s. artist"), countless conservatives in the Political Establishment are trying their utmost to throw cold water on the hopes of some Americans that we could actually revert to being the most free, most prosperous and most successful country on earth.
Perhaps it is "silly" of me to think that might be the direction in which Trump would lead the country if given the opportunity, but it would be even sillier still if our esteemed punditry continued to ignore the fact that leaders become leaders when people are motivated to follow them. It is a bottom-up process, not a top-down one in which the Ruling Class decides the candidate and proclaims it to be so.
I didn't join the Republican party to emulate my liberal friends and neighbors who were forced to sit back and watch as Democrat "Super Delegates" chose Obama as their party's presidential nominee, regardless of the primaries. Here's a prime example I will never forget (nor forgive):

Did Peter Wehner ever write that "flirting" with a Barack Obama presidential run was "silly"? I don't think so. And if Jonah Goldberg ever called Obama a "b.s. artist" I think we would have heard about it.
Should this pattern of a circular firing squad hold much longer, Republican voters will split off from the party establishment and the whole thing will self-destruct. The very moment that voters express an interest in Donald Trump, our ostensible spokesmen rush to ridicule and dismiss him? And this helps whom? how and what?
I have long liked and respected Jonah Goldberg, but does this make sense?
My column today is on the Donald and already I’m getting some blowback from his fans. Which gives me the opportunity to keep piling on.
What happened to the opportunity to "pile on" the bad guys, the ones who are driving this country over a cliff even as we speak? I don't understand the priorities of anyone who would choose to use their time, ink and influence to trash Donald Trump. Did Trump create our unsustainable national debt? Did he shove his ideology down our throats by legislative force? Did he mishandle crises in the Middle East and get us into a third war? Did he throw Mubarak under the bus? Or send Bibi out the back door? Is he sending halal meals to the Libyan rebels at our expense? Or trying to put our energy industry out of business? Is Trump the one who has destroyed millions of American jobs? Is he threatening to redistribute our wealth? Raise taxes? Does he repress the media? Bow to dictators?
All presidential candidates -including Barack Obama- and potential candidates -like Donald Trump- should be scrutinized, but make no mistake, dismissing possibilities and crushing hopes right out of the gate is not scrutiny. Surely to do so is self-destructive, as is continuing to tip-toe around the arrogance of this president and the cold fury of voters towards him.
With the stakes higher than they have ever been in our lifetimes, can we please keep our priorities straight and our eyes on the ball? Shooting oneself in the foot is not a plan if you want to win. And win we must.
