Mannie Sherberg
We are three-plus years into the most destructive presidency in American history, and the dreadful truth is that a majority -- apparently a very large majority -- of the American people still don't give a damn about this issue. It becomes more and more evident with each passing day that what the American people do want is to be lulled and soothed and tranquilized. As the world around us becomes scarier and more threatening, a large chunk of our citizenry is regressing into childhood -- looking for the same comfort small kids seek when they run to their mothers sobbing, "Mommy, mommy, the boogieman is in my room!" The Obama birth certificate story is both discomforting and threatening; it signals that there may be something deeply wrong with the way our country is working. And that is the last message our increasingly juvenile citizenry wants to hear. So the message is being suppressed -- and it will, in all likelihood -- never gain traction. Far too many Americans are throwing off the burden of freedom because that burden is becoming psychologically unbearable. This is the ace up Obama's sleeve.
