Elkins may be right; indeed, some conservatives are even suggesting that a crafty John Roberts decided as he did in order to throw the election to Romney. All of this strikes me as putting lipstick on a pig. Even if Romney wins the White House, he will be powerless to do much about Obamacare unless he also gets a Republican House and a Republican Senate. And that is an exceedingly tall order. Even if that happens, repealing a bill that will, by next January, be considerably more entrenched than it is today, will by no means be a given. The harsh truth is, for the present, that Obamacare is the law of the land -- thanks to the Chief Justice -- and is weighing our economy down like nothing else in recent memory. This weight could've been lifted had Roberts voted differently. For my money, the wisest comment on this entire mess is Tom Glennon's on the post preceding this one. As Tom so clearly says, the relationship between citizen and government has been transformed -- and much for the worse. We have a huge mountain to climb in the months ahead. And we'd better succeed in the climb; this morning's report showed unemployment claims up for the third straight week. Today -- whether we like it or not -- was a banner day for American socialism.
