To illustrate the meaning of the Yiddish "shlimazel," the late and much-lamented Leo Rosten cited a poem by the 12th-century Hebrew poet Abraham ibn Ezra (the translation, I'm almost certain, is Rosten's): "If I sold lamps,/ the sun,/ in spite,/ would shine/ at night." Our illustrious president is a shlimazel, and he is selling -- like the hapless lamp salesman -- something we don't need: four more years of presidential skullduggery. I predict that on November 6th the sun will shine at night.
