Mannie Sherberg
If we've learned anything about Obama over the past 3 1/2 years, it's that he's spent his entire lifetime creating a persona behind which he can hide. Evidently, building a fake facade is a never-ending task; like the Eveready Bunny, it goes on and on and on ... That, I suspect, is what the "I don't have as much time to campaign" line is all about. We're supposed to believe that this savior of the nation is so burdened -- so bent down -- with the formidable task of creating jobs at home and demolishing our enemies abroad that he cannot take time out to do the campaigning that ordinary mortals like Mitt Romney have the time to do. Thanks, then, to his sacrificial toil on behalf of the nation, he may lose the election -- unless the people for whom he is sacrificing himself come to his aid. This mournful -- indeed, lachrymose -- tale is, of course, supposed to elicit a flood of donations from the plebes -- once they finish wiping the tears from their eyes and shouting hosannas for the man who is not just their president but their paladin. Are there really shlemiels out there who will fall for this cock-and-bull story and write an extra check to the One's campaign? Probably. To paraphrase Koheleth: "Of the making of shlemiels there is no end."
