The White House released a statement saying Obama had "recommended" that Netanyahu accept the ceasefire -- diplomatic language for telling Netanyahu he better, or else. As for what Obama in effect told Israel to accept, see Jeff Jacoby: "Any ceasefire now means a win for Hamas, which will go on fomenting violence, hatred, and death. Diplomacy cannot solve the problem of terrorist regimes. Neither can unilateral concessions or UN resolutions. The only solution is to deprive the terrorists of power."

Lt. Col. (ret.) Jonathan D. Halevi writes that "Hamas views each round of armed conflict with Israel as a stage in a long-term war of attrition. Hamas leaders hope the increasingly severe and violent outbreaks will eventually erode Israel’s resilience, while goading the masses toward the emergence of a united military front for the liberation of Palestine. " Where is the end game in this situation?
