Sending the warships is -- no pun intended -- pure showboating. This administration glories in grandstanding, hot-dogging, chest-thumping ("We got Osama!") exhibitionism. Government-by-theatrics is always a sure sign that the government lacks the willpower to do what'll work rather than what'll dazzle. What'd work in this case would be Obama putting the screws to Morsi by stopping all aid to Egypt until Egypt gets its Gazan client under strict control. As it is, the administration is making Morsi look like a "statesman" and a "peacemaker" when he's really a major part of the problem. The only thing missing from this sorry farce is Frank Sinatra -- decked out in his sailor's uniform from "Anchors Aweigh" -- providing background music.

In a different world, the warships would have appeared off the coast of Gaza, with a message delivered through Egypt that the force would join the fight if the rocket attacks on a U.S. ally did stop by the end of the day.
