Hope on the horizon

Rick Richman, being one of my favorite people, has written a delicious piece about two of my favorite people -- er, public figures: Calvin Coolidge and Dr. Ben Carson.

... Dr. Benjamin Carson’s recent speech at the National Prayer Breakfast.... was Coolidge-like in its understated eloquence, its focus on moral decay and fiscal irresponsibility, its religious power and sense of history, and its warning against trying to build up the weak by pulling down the strong.

Rick's very fine piece got me to pondering: There are still plenty of Americans around who were not much more than toddlers when Coolidge was in the White House; to think that in their lifetime we have gone from Coolidge to Obama is -- by itself -- a refutation of the Whig theory of history.

Since we went from Wilson to Coolidge, and Carter to Reagan, and Clinton to Bush 43, and from Obama to the Tea Party shellacking, it seems to me that with the right candidate and the right ideas, and a little help from Obama' proclivity for over-reaching, things can turn again. The problem with this long-term view, however, may be what Keynes said about the long run.
