At the Weekly Standard, editor Bill Kristol highlights part of Winston Churchill's 1938 speech in the House of Commons on the Munich Agreement, and urges us to "read it all" -- which I obediently did.  My favorite bit is this, in which Churchill quotes "the rugged words of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, written a thousand years ago."

Here is what the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle said, and I think the words apply very much ...

"All these calamities fell upon us because of evil counsel, because tribute was not offered to them at the right time nor yet were they resisted; but when they had done the most evil, then was peace made with them."

That is the wisdom of the past, for all wisdom is not new wisdom.

Caroline Glick says Obama's goal is to "weaken the State of Israel." Yes, but why? To what end? Why stop with the mere weakening of the the state? Would it not be more accurate to say his goal is to further the destruction of Israel -- and that Iran is the instrument he has chosen to do the destroying? Israel -- the epitome of particularity in the modern world -- has always been a stench in the nostrils of the Left; its very existence is an affront to the universalism at the heart of the utopian myth. An enfeebled Israel would still be an affront. Better, from the Left's point of view, no Israel at all. This, I fear, is Obama's real goal.
